Home Is Of Ashland, Oregon #homeisoftheheart #homesicknomore

It's only recently that I have felt truly comfortable 'within my own skin' enhancing the empowering sense of finally being home without.  For the majority of my life, of which reasoning I now see to be trauma related, I have felt lost, swimming frantically searching for, a life boat, a stretch of land of peace and stability, endlessly seeking approval never fully granted.  The real meaning of the word 'homesick' a part of my inner being lifelong.

During the time of which I speak
It was hard to turn the other cheek
To the blows of insecurity

However, the antidote to that, has been a long journey of discovery and recovery starting in late 2006 with the diagnosis of Bipolar.  For this catapulted me into the various formats of therapy, support groups, and psychological testing, that led me deeper within than I had ever imagined or wanted to travel.  Scary to begin with, but as I continued thus, the terrain became a little less treacherous, even in times of painful struggle, the overcoming seemed less insurmountable.  With each hurdle, each secret unraveled, each victory proclaimed, a calmness overtook me, I found at once a peace bubbling upwards over inside of  me.  I was coming home within again and again.

Oh, how I wish I were a trinity
So if I lost a part of me
I'd still have two of the same to live
But nobody gets a lifetime rehearsal
As specks of dust, we're universal

Yet, with all this continued soul-searching and discovery, I still felt an inner restless, seeking outward with hopeful dreams that perhaps I shall attain, an almost FOMO for what I do not have, all the while the inner fantasy of what could have been an ever distant impossibility.  What these fantasies afforded me, specifically that of the childhood idealization of Night Court and Harry Anderson, was the dream of that which I always deserved, unconditional love, encouragement, and support for my entire self as I am.  That fantasy impossible to become real left a bit of my inner self still broken, still lonely.

But despite this empty broken-heart within, the journey of recovery still continued, this restlessness always lead me to never to give in, give up.  Along the way, these travels inner and outer coincided with my residing in Ashland, Oregon.  Try as I might to kindle some attachment or connection to another place permanently, Ashland continued to have her hold upon me.  No matter the changes that transform this city for the positive or negative, it's the inner work within myself that is enhanced by living in such a beautiful, transcendence of a place.  Since my first arrival in Ashland at the tender age of 15, dragged here one spring break by my parents, when I instantly fell in love, I knew, then, transferring into Southern Oregon University at the age of 21 because I knew, despite all the hardship therein and that to come, the different phases of my life, from Miss, to Mrs, to Ms, student, teacher, wife, actor, model, entrepreneur, the one constant of this journey has been the loving embrace of this beautiful city, Mother Ashland.

As I walk her streets now, I am filled with the memory of others history alongside, as well as my own, the different parts of me healed by my strength upon strength, I embrace each and all, vividly with each moment, alive with the fullness of real love of self, finally and continually home within.  Truly, truly, Home is of the heart, Home is of Ashland, Oregon.

Though it's stormy now I feel safe within the arms
Of love's discovery

Grief Is Grief #parasocialrelationship #suzannesomers #richardmoll #matthewperry

In the last two weeks, American pop-culture has lost three individuals from different decades of TV fame.  Yes, there were others and I wish not to discredit the effect of their loss, but for the purpose of this article, I wish to focus on the TV celebrities who graced the small screen of 70's, 80's, & 90's top TV shows.  These actors include, Suzanne Somers, Three's Company in the 70's, then later so much more, Richard Moll, Night Court in the 80's but also so much more, and, finally, Matthew Perry, Friends in the 90's, and so much more.  The loss of these three has profoundly left a mark of heart-break across the wide culture of America.  Yet, for those outside Hollywood, scarcely honestly knew each of these, perhaps a mere chance encounter, however, mostly through the medium of TV on their various shows and characters, perhaps an interview or social media presence.  The relationship of those non-Hollywood related, non personal friends or colleagues of Somers, Moll, and Perry would fall into the category of "Parasocial Relationship".

Abstaining from crossing over to a level of psychosis in parasocial relationship, such as a stalker, most do have a certain celebrity or celebrities that have touched them in such a way that has profoundly impacted, such being the reasoning behind my podcast the "FanGirlHour, wherein the guest shares the reasons behind their fave fandom.  (See: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/fangirling)  Yet, even with the lesser level of parasocial connectivity, a fan can still maintain the logical distance in understanding the separation of relationship, meaning, "It's not real, man".  Generally speaking, this understanding of the relationship is acceptable, to 'fangirl' as such is not only socially acceptable, a norm within society, but also emotionally fulfilling for the fan.  Yet, what happens to the human heart when the celebrity passes away from this plane of existence to whatever lies beyond?

Unlike most, celebrities of TV and film, leave behind a plethora of content to mine through and thus can be healing for those left behind, whether close friend or fan, especially with the three mentioned.  Suzanne Somers was less relevant in current times yet her body of work expanded decades as well the mark of fighting for equality of pay for female actors to male actors far outreaching.

Richard Moll, similar to Suzanne Somers in relevance, aside from a select group of loyal fans mostly to that of Night Court.  Night Court, a quirky court-room, comedy was obscure as it was relevant.  Within the context of the often silly humor, a deeper meaning of society is reflected upon the viewer, if they catch or not not always necessary.  Therefore, the quirky complexity of Night Court was oft overshadowed by the television show, Cheers, which location and characters were more accessible to every day life.  The current age of fandom for Night Court is found in those individuals aging from their late 30's through early 50s, those that were smallish children at the time the show was airing.  Growing up, these young fans, most likely, did not fully grasp the depth of the story yet enjoyed the silly comedy.  Therefore, these viewers followed the story through the Richard Moll's "Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon", whose simple yet wise fool, viewed the goings-on with the child-like wonder and sometimes confusion that the younger audience could relate.  Therein lies the intense heart-break of his death.

However, the most accessible and heartbreaking loss of many is that of 54 year old Matthew Perry, most famous for Chandler Bing, on the 90's show, Friends.  Even more widely accessible and understood than even Cheers, Friends was a show with the simple concept of several friendships over a ten year span living, working, falling in and out of love in New York City.  Each of the six characters, vividly depicted, were different from one another yet continued to love and cherish the connection.  Perry's "Chandler" was known as the sarcastic yet socially climber enthusiast of the group, yet within a heart of gold and intense loyalty to his 'family of friends'.  Therefore, Perry's still higher relevance upon society, his show still widely viewed in popularity, has left an even deeper mark upon the hearts of many.  Friendship is a universal desire among all, thus the loss of Matthew Perry leaves the feeling of truly 'losing a friend'.

As said above, the loss of a celebrity to one who held only a parasocial connection is fraught.  At once, the logical sense states that the grief is irrelevant and yet not as important as those we lost we actually knew.  However, the heart, the emotional part, only truly knows that what once was here is now gone.  Thus, grief, no matter the closeness of the relationship, is simply that, grief.  The stages therein of grief, no matter the context, must be experienced as any other.  The loss is significant, if not, for the individual but also for the collective.

In the wake of the sudden absence of a celebrity, the process of healing is best when allowed freely without judgment, reflecting upon the lessons learned from what they gave to one and to all, cherishing the happy moments, and experiencing freely the heart-break of farewell.

Be Positive?

No sugar coating it, the world is one messed up place right now.  Climate change, droughts and the west coast now has five seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer, Fire), a global pandemic continuing to spread, divisions world-wide on that as well as other political and social issues like never before (or at least as visibly seen), sister against sister, brother against brother, friends turned into enemies, our country on the brink of starting world war three with Russia....maybe....

So, can one truly 'be positive'?  How am I truly positive in the wake of all this? Am I blind or ignorant? Not in the least, but I choose to not allow myself to dwell in a state of helplessness and hopelessness.  I choose to do what I can each day to better myself and what is before me.  That is all I can do.
This scene from Night Court has been my personal motto: Dan comforts Harry  Specifically, Dan's line: "We can only do what the law allows us to do, that's it" inspires me, motivates me, gets me every time.  And, yes, Night Court is my Numero Uno fandom from my wee childhood days playing pretend Night Court in my basement, so, yes, life lessons galore pour over me with that show, but I think the lesson can apply to all of us.

"We can only do what the law allows us to do, that's it," says Dan. And, I take it to mean, there is only one of each of us and before us only what we CAN do, nothing more, that's it.  Focus on today, take care of you, of what's around you, seek the beauty in what's in front, seek to discover love within, and let that drive you to love without.  I say with Dan Fielding, 'That's it, it's that simple. Truly it is.'

For myself, I rise each morning to morning yoga and mindfulness meditation, I seek healthy and nourishing food, I exercise daily, I read and take in healthy content, I seek to truly see those around me that I love and who love me back, whose influence is receiving and freely giving without conditions.  From that, the ability to make a change extends outward naturally, weekly I drive down to my local recycling center to unload as much as I can to reduce waste and my footprint upon Mother Earth, I place old food and bird seed out for the animals as well as dishes of water when needed, I cultivate a garden and plant trees, (no longer do I purchase a cut Christmas tree but now do only living each year), I make birthday and holiday cards for all my family and beloved friends, I create film and media projects that uplift and inspire those I love as well as myself, and currently I am running a fundraiser for my dear friend, Michael: Help Michael & MeMe Thrive

It truly is that simple.  Focus on yourself first and then freely the answers to make a difference for the better will come.  Breathe in, breathe out.  Just be and the light of living in the positive, despite the circumstances of hardship whatever they be, will arrive.

Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbow's are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some Choose to believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and see
Someday we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

I was groomed. (TW: Pastoral Abuse)

I was groomed.  By a pastor.  Specifically, a Calvary Chapel pastor.

Once upon a time, a few mistakes ago
I was in your sights, you got me alone
You found me, you found me, you found me
I guess you didn't care, and I guess I liked that
And when I fell hard you took a step back
Without me, without me, without me
And he's long gone when he's next to me
And I realize the blame is on me
And the saddest fear comes creeping in
That you never loved me or her, or anyone, or anything, yeah

So, I set out this week to write a blog about my dealings with imposter syndrome and I shall do thus in the very near future.  But, something else kept pressing hard on my heart, something which was brought into my clear focus after reading my friend, Amy Nordhues book, "Preyed Upon: Breaking Free From Therapist Abuse", which she details her account of being groomed, taken advantage of, controlled, and sexually molested by a spiritual elder and her therapist.

Personally, as I read Amy's accounts of the tactics used by her therapist, I suddenly was brought close and personal with the truth that I had been chosen by a pastor in his attempts to groom me, control me, for his own pleasure.  Fortunately, I was able to release myself from under his sway in that it never went beyond the initial stages of manipulation and grooming, never became physical in any regard, but nevertheless the mind control tactics he utilized to silence and shame me have had longlasting effects.  Even now, as I sit in a place fully deconstructed from the fundamentalist worldview I fell prey to, it stings to admit to myself that I was a victim of pastoral abuse, and that a huge part of my religious trauma stems from that yet unexamined or healed from fully.

Perhaps because it never went beyond the initial 'flirting' and special treatment he placed upon me, perhaps out of my own guilt from behaviors I fell into while in the midst of my early recovery, perhaps ultimately it is because I have utmost respect and love for his family, it is an issue that I have yet to fully comprehend, admit and release.

But it occured.  And, I have no evidence to accuse nor do I want to, ultimately I want to move on from my life further and further into healthier relationships where I find peace, trust, and am fully valued, not used.  But, there comes a time when that layer of pain needs to be peeled off, examined, understood, and healed.  Many would say that I need to be able to forgive him for his behaviors, but first I need to forgive myself and in so doing come to understand how I became fodder for his ploys.

Many friends and acquaintances, even family members, that knew me during that time of life could point to my struggles with my mental health and actions of abuse that I perpetrated occured because of that as my fault alone and that this pastor was the caretaker who went above and beyond in assisting me towards health, longsuffering he seemed, while I was the abuser, he the victim of my manipulation.  In all honesty, I admit my wrongdoings and as long as I live will strive to live in a way that redeems and seeks forgiveness for those I have wronged, as sure as I continue to move myself forward.  As I continue in my healing journey in understanding and forgiving myself, I am fully able to release the anchors that weigh me down by past transgressions and move forward into making a more positive life for myself and those around me.

But, what I have come to realize is that all my life I have been traumatized by a variety of abusers and the more I realize this and separate myself from, the better my life becomes and the more I do not victimize or abuse others.  Furthermore, the grooming and specialness this pastor poured upon started before ever I attributed signs of extreme mental illness.  Rather, when he met me, he had yet to see any signs of dysfunction, even though I have experienced all of my life symptoms of bipolar mood disorder as well as have suffered life long with the effects of abuse.  But, as I had been so aptly taught, I was fairly decent at masking and hiding my darknesses, until extreme stress brought the struggles to the forefront.

It is important for me to note that of the four pastors I had a friendship with of the three Calvary Chapels I once called home, only one victimized me in this regard.  It is of extreme import that I impress that the manipulative tactics of this said pastor was ramped up during my early days of diagnosis, coming to my aid as prayer warrior, counselor, spiritual advisor, attempts to enable my reliance on him, through special allowances at times, as well as isolation from others, and as I derailed further into madness seemingly he looking like the victim aligning himself with others' in the church family who actually were, while still stirring my emotional pot to victimize me separately.

He did what he did to isolate me from others.

Once again, I must confess and openly admit that I was wrong in my behaviors, that at this point, I had suffered all of my life with emotional outbursts that had largely been either placated or, worse, ignored.  So, it was in this time, that due to these emotional outbursts and irregularities, they were finally called to the carpet, whereas due to them I lost my teaching job, close friendships, church family, and boyfriend, as should be the consequences for toxic behavior, mine own or of another.

Yet, as I have mentioned above, my issues with anger and abuse were greatly magnetized by being the victim and abuse of another, however, that may be.  It was only when marrying my husband and realizing that I was quickly heading into battered wife syndrome, then separating and divorcing him, that I began to see how far back the abuse and types of abusers had plagued me throughout my life, causing such harm within and without, nearly causing me to become incompetent to survival yet alone to truly thrive.

So, yes, he groomed me, out of his own desires.  It hurts to say, I want to believe he is good at heart and has the best intentions, a loyal husband to his wife and a pious individual intent on leading others to the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Perhaps part of him is such, but in the nuance of all people he is not alone in such.  Furthermore, Calvary Chapel, as well as other fundamentalist churches of its ilk, do not condone mental health healing, rather any irregularity is attached to sin, being out of God's will, the attacks of satan himself, and thus all of these matters should be dealt in the confines of the church and through christian counseling.  In addition, education beyond the simplest elementary training is looked down upon as satanic and a detraction from God's design for one's life.  Thus, further education is discouraged and for the most part pastors, spiritual leaders, or christians in general rarely seek higher education or they are home-schooled with material that suits the purposes of their worldview.  Then, a young man, at the tender age of 18, is told they are chosen by God, anointed by the most high, to lead a church of all ages, and all must submit to the authority of the senior pastor.  No matter the good intentions, most men without any formal training or critical thinking skills would fall prey to abuse of power, cult of personality, or, yes, sexual misconduct.  Pastors declare from the pulpit, "don't worship me, don't worship me, but worship God" to no avail.   In addition, the purity culture mindset is firmly rooted upon and all are encouraged not to commit any sexual act before marriage, resulting in short term 'courtships' and then marriages to those they do not fully know or may not be fully compatible.  Divorce, as well, is never an option.

In addition, one of the main teachings within Calvary Chapel christianity as well as others is that the root of evil and sin was brought about by Eve's discretion and disobedience.  Thus, the woman is the cause and the stumbling block for men.  So much of that is reinforced in purity conferences where young girls and women are separated from men and lectured on how we need to dress to conceal in order not to cause the men of the church to detract.  A quick google or youtube search on "Calvary Chapel" and many articles and videos will emerge discussing this form of abuse of power from a variety of pastors.  In this regard, Calvary Chapel is not the only victimizer, the Catholic Church has also been found at fault, as well as other mainstream christian churches, and perhaps other faiths, have perpetrated this abuse.  Whenever a person is in a position of power and authority of another, there is probability that abuse can occur if the personality style and perhaps their own unhealed trauma abuse history is at play.

I reacted to this stance by diving deeper into my life-long struggle with body dysmorphia and developing anorexia nervosa.  Perhaps, if I could lose my natural body features, become more child-like in frame, I would be less likely to cause a male church member to stumble.  After all, I was like Eve, a female, and, furthermore, was I also a Jezebel?

So, yes, I was victimized and groomed by a Calvary Chapel pastor.  His name I will not state because I have no evidence, but I will admit the denomination.  This grooming and special treatment occured when he first met me, during my mental breakdown, and then the early stages of my recovery.  He isolated me from the church family, which was yes, needed, due to my abusive actions, but these actions were perpetrated by his intentions.  Once I was separated from them, he began to play 'serotonin games', or rather 'come alittle closer, no go away', whereas in private settings or even if we met at a cafe, he was all smiles and we had a close conversation, while other times when others were around, he would seem almost cold to me, telling me how he couldn't be my friend, I was becoming too involved with his life and needed to stop.  Yet, later on he would once again, reinforce the interaction by pulling me towards him.

During a particular stressful time of my life and early recovery, after dealing with the loss of my favorite grandfather as well as breaking up with my boyfriend, and having not ever been able to feel any sort of intense 'negative' emotions all of my life, I came to the pastor who had groomed me to rely upon him solely, crying uncontrollably, he insisted that my tears were 'crocodile ploys of manipulation' (at times they were, but in this instance not), and later after heavy targetted prayers to reassure, encourage, and control, when I felt less weepy, and when walking out the door, I made a joke, he smiled sardonically, and said, "Lots of women I have ministered to have fallen in love with me'. *** Too shocked to say anything, I did not express, I was dumbfounded yet internalized that in wonders, was I in love with him? Yet, I kept coming back to the truth that I was not and after years of talking to other post fundies, of sharing this story, and deconstructing, I can attest this was a tactic of his to confuse and confound me, to get me to further need him, and once he got what he desired, if he ever did, to make it seem as if I was the Eve that had seduced.

***(Note: this pastor confided in myself and my boyfriend at the time that he had been molested by a youth counselor in junior high.  In addition, when I was attending a christian based 12 step recovery program, Celebrate Recovery, this pastor had also been going through a similar accountability group with one man at his church, however, he jokingly laughed at how he had stopped halfway through, sighting "bad at his recovery".  I strongly suspect it had something to do with not wanting to openly admit something that would not only lose him favor and sway over the parishner he was counseling but possibility cause him to lose his position and possibly face legal action.  However, that is strongly conjecture.  Furthermore, similar to that of, say, the Catholic church scandal, it is becoming increasingly widely known that many Calvary Chapels have dealt with a myriad of pastoral abuse regarding sexual mis-conduct whether with another adult or even towards a child.  All too often, like the Catholic Church, the pastor is quietly moved to another part of the country or world without explanation, as a form of cover-up.  The pastor that wounded me specifically had recently moved from serving first at one church, then moved to another, before moving to start his own church in another city.  The three cities weren't that far apart from each other and I do not want to convict of something I know not with certainty, but upon looking at my experience as well as reading other materials of predatory behavior from religious leaders, a deeper look into the reasoning for those moves might be warranted. )

For the majority of my life, I have looked for a warm father figure to make me feel whole, whether it be through the television show, Night Court, in the person of Harry Anderson, from my favorite high school teacher, Fernando Nugent (the strongest and warmest father figure I ever have had), or even from romantic partners.  Just a few years before attending this church and meeting this pastor, I had lost that favorite high school teacher and yet had not fully had grieved.  Thus, I was in search of another to fill that role and being a newly minted believer I could look no further than a strong spiritual leader as this pastor, who was also seemingly a strong and deeply committed family man.  That alone was what I was seeking and what I desired.

As I write this, it pains me to admit that I was not alone in his desires or attentions in this regard, that there were most likely others before me, as he seemed to admit, and most likely have been others after me.  It both pains me to think that he could have gotten away with more in his attempts to groom, seduce, control but also there is some hold out on hope that whoever she or he is they could call him out and press charges.  For me, I cannot do such as I have no actual proof of any misconduct, it never went that far.  Even in my early stages of recovery, I was able to start breaking free from his grasp as I became increasingly aware of my own abilities discovering my own strength and was able to once again use my critical thinking skills to begin to see the flaws within Calvary Chapel, at first, being the emptiness and fakeness of the human interactions on a surface level.  This caused me to walk out the door one Sunday after church, not knowing at the time that I would never return, yet once done, the Pandora's Box was open and out came all that I was seemingly condoning or making allowances for, that is what you call deconstruction, my friends, and it is not an easy process, although so very necessary and freeing.

Thus, my admitting of this pastor's abuse, seemingly mild, is one of the deepest faults to be revealed about Calvary Chapel.  Yet, at this moment, it is for my own benefit and healing that I admit.  In earlier years after initially leaving Calvary Chapel, I wondered why he was the first ever person I blocked on all my social media accounts, why I felt fear whenever I thought I could see him or did run into him, why I felt guilt where there was none even after I had worked through and absolved my own, but now I am realizing the reasons why and am proud of my younger self for taking those steps to break free, even though I didn't understand then.

No, I cannot call the cavalry to take down this Calvary pastor, however, I will share my story and work towards my own healing for my own good as well as the good of others who may have fallen prey to such type as pastoral or spiritual abuse, or who may be targetted in the future.  By bringing light to such offense in my own past, I can help to raise awareness as a whole and begin to help others in their healing, deconstruction, and to truly, break free.

Trying hard to reach out
But when I tried to speak out
Felt like no one could hear me
Wanted to belong here
But something felt so wrong here
So I prayed (I would pray)
I could breakaway
I'll spread my wings and I'll learn how to fly
I'll do what it takes 'til I touch the sky
And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway
Out of the darkness and into the sun
But I won't forget all the ones that I love
I'll take a risk, take a chance, make a change
And breakaway

Name Changes

The dawn of a new year is upon us which always causes a time of reflection mingled with the air of celebratory mirth.  Increasingly this year 2021, I have found myself in a phase of evolution, moving further away from who I once thought I was and what I allowed to impact, including the labels I chose for myself and others deemed appropriate, now looking inward and discovering more truths that need to be revealed at last, no longer hidden.  Thus, the evolution stirs a decision to formally change my identity, not just of the words attached towards me that identify but that of my business, Cafe-Girl Productions, Inc.

As a child, I had a great love for the show, Night Court, as mentioned many, many times, at length, in a variety of capacity.  Once again, when I was a mere young thing, I wished so intensely that the actor, Harry Anderson, was in fact my father, imagining that my name was Elizabeth.  Not sure why I chose that name as a youngster, it just came to me and I claimed it.  Throughout all of my life, I have returned to Elizabeth, even presently, as I go about my day outwardly as Lia, inwardly I feel what life would be like as if I am her, as if all of my life I lived as her and not in the world I did outwardly.  Its as if I can see everything she did, her childhood home, her friends, each memory is vivid and understood within me, somehow.  Parallel universe, perhaps? Who can tell.  But, what I am starting to understand is that as I begin to heal more, I find myself uniting with her more deeply, so that it's less an escape from reality into safety, but rather we are both one.  Thus, I have decided to adopt her identity within mine by adding the name "Elizabeth" to my moniker.  In a very real sense, I am fully engaging every part of me and bringing to the surface, no longer needing to hide or flee.

More than the inner need of my heart to be true to myself and my calling, I have discovered the powerful truth of the meaning of names and the vibrations heard linked together to impact my soul's truth more deeply.  I have yet to make the official change, for now, legally I am still "Lia Rose Dugal", but the legality of its fullness will come intime.  For now, the change has been made official on social media alone.

The next revelation came as a shock to me but when it arrived in its fullness I was surprised that I had not recognised outwardly its need.  Over the last two years, I have discovered and am clearly defining the brand and emphasis of my business and entrepreneural endeavors.  It came upon me as a deep revelation that I always knew within that the focus of my business is that of the thriving artist, rather to help artists of every variety seek and love their thrive.  Working with a business advisor, I have discovered that the "productions" name, once fitting for a film company alone, does not fully encompass all that Cafe-Girl seeks to achieve.  My business partners and I have been tossing ideas back and forth that feel more fitting and have narrowed it down to either "Cafe-Girl Thriving Artists, Inc" or "Cafe-Girl Artists, Inc".  Our brand slogan is simply, "Love Your Thrive" so we were debating whether the usage of "thriving" needs to be within the main name itself.

So, first I want to be a person and businesswoman that hears and takes into consideration those she works and cares for, honoring their input and seeing its validity.  So, in a sense, we decided upon "Cafe-Girl Artists, Inc", but in my head I kept referring to "Cafe-Girl Thriving Artists, Inc", without any effort it flowed from within and then without.

Throughout these last two years, I have entered fully into recovery, through private therapy as well as self help books galore.  A large facet of this is in committing to fully love and honor myself, being able to receive love from others without feeling an obligation to give back.  Being free to receive is not selfish as I am still a person that gives and loves freely.  Furthermore, there is a necessity within myself to honor my inner voice.  I have toyed with this, feeling that if I voiced my desire for the "thriving" within the name, I would discredit the input and voice of my business partners.  However, the resounding truth kept echoing within my heart, these are true friends, who love, honor, support, and, above all, truly see me, as I truly love, honor, support, and, above all, see them.  Thus, by me laying out my heart to them on this issue, they will not feel unheard or devalued, but will see the need to continue to assure I am valued by them.  Nothing is set in stone as far as the business name change, nor does it have to be deciding upon in this moment, the appropriate name will make itself known in its perfect time.

In the synchronicity of the changes of identity for myself and business, I have discovered once again the fullness of knowing and being true to oneself within and allowing that to spill outwards.  That, in fact, is the true pathway towards being a thriving artist.

                                                        Rise

    I won't just survive
Oh, you will see me thrive
Can't write my story
I'm beyond the archetype
I won't just conform
No matter how you shake my core
'Cause my roots, they run deep, oh

Spirit Guides Ain't What They Seem: Night Court Of Life Lessons, The Final Chapter

Death Is Not The End, But A Shift In The Relationship

At last, we have reached the final entry, the epilogue as it were, the conclusion of all the lessons wrapped up in neat little paragraphs across the screen.

In my studies post-fundie world, I have dived deep into a variety of spiritual beliefs and practices out of my own endless curiosity and desire to seek.  One aspect that seems to have found its root within me is the idea of the soul contract, the bond formed before incarnating with other souls we meet or are linked to on this planet.  I say "linked" because I have come to realize that these souls may not be those we know personally in our day to day but nevertheless the bond is fastened and serves a purpose.

I see the variety of cast of Night Court as those souls who have bonded to mine, whose selves agreed upon a soul contract with mine before we came to this earth, in this time and this place.  That bond formed is solidified in an eternal connection felt while in the here and now, even if not distinctly understandable, and is deepened when one reaches the ever-after.  Thus, the soul upon dying becomes a personal spirit guide.

That, however strange it may seem, is what I have come to believe and trust within.  It gives much comfort in the time of grieving to be able to move forward in my soul's journey, knowing truly I go not alone and have several acting as guides, teachers, lighting and encouraging my path.  As Mitch Albom expressed in his book, "Tuesdays With Morrie":

   "The Teaching Goes On."

That is the grandest of  life lessons given down to me from Night Court, among other souls who I have contracted with and who have become spirit guides now in their ever-after.  That which I am the most grateful for, that in their physical absence, gone they are not from my life and I only need to quiet myself within and listen to truly hear.  They are never far from me, nearer than what once was.

As I finish this last entry, I ask for your thoughts as well as that which you have learned, not from these entries alone, but from Night Court itself or other spirit guides within your own life, be it a TV show or something or someone else.  Perhaps, as I have reached the end of this for now, I will turn to another lesson teacher, (School Is Always In Session at '90210, perhaps?) but for now I rest with the knowledge that I attained my goal of sharing these life lessons and in the sharing I have gleaned ever deeper truths to be told.

My wish, for you, is that this life becomes all that you want it to
Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small
You never need to carry more than you can hold
And while you're out there getting where you're getting to
I hope you know somebody loves you, and wants the same things too

My Wish

Every little thing is gonna be all right: Night Court Of Life Lessons Chapter 15

It's Gonna Be Okay

The message of today is to meditate on the special unique power of friendship, real, lasting, pure, and unconditional.  The type of friend that will love you with honesty and authenticity, enjoying the times of mirth and good fortunate, weeping over the hard times, and will bluntly tell you when you've gone off the rails into the danger zone.  The characters' and their arcs throughout the run of Night Court OG reflected that.   From the dawn of the first episode through the final episode, they grew through the years as they got to know each other and experienced the peaks and the pitfalls of life.  They were honest enough to help steer someone back on course if they had gone astray or were acting in anyway out of normalcy or with disregard.  In the times when one fell into despair, they were also there to help rebuild and bring them back.  This often expressed itself in many a form based not just on the storyline but also the character themselves.

As I scan through Night Court's IMDB page, I am awash with many examples showing how the characters' demonstrated true friendship and were there for one another when needed.  However, in the instance of time (and yes I can go all day chatting on NC because it's the best ever), I will only showcase a couple.  First, in season two, episode nineteen, "Married Alive", (a personal favorite), Dan meets, falls in love with, and gets engaged to an 'ugly duckling' rich heiriss.  While his friends' doubt his authenticity when it comes to the upcoming nuptials thinking its merely for financial gain, Dan actually has fallen for this woman because he finds in her someone who he can let down his guard and be real with, proving that there is more nuance to Dan than he allows to be seen.  (That's why I love him so much!)

Dan Fielding: [snaps his fingers] Poof! I mean just like your magic, Harry. She makes my problems disappear, my anxieties subside. I mean God's in his heaven, all is right with the world, there's nowhere to go but up, look for the silver lining, don't give up the ship! And I'll be damned if that's not what each and every one of us is looking for, and I just happened to find mine, so the best of luck to the rest of you. You know that crazy stuff that we all carry around inside of us? That stuff that eats little holes in your brain and churns at your insides? That stuff that you know you cannot possibly tell another living human being? I can tell her. And she listens, and she understands. She says "It's all right. [long pause]It's all right." And it IS.

In the end, it is his fiance' who backs out of the marriage due to her terror when her father threatens to cut her off, leaving Dan heartbroken.   Outwardly, Dan puts on a brave face, but finding himself alone with the pain, he turns to the one friend present, Harry, calling out to him with, "Harry!" who comforts him in return with "It'll be all right, Dan", leaving together with their arms around each others'  shoulders.

The favor is returned to Harry by Dan in season three, episodes nine and ten, "Wheels Of Justice", Harry becomes downtrodden when he sees himself as a failure to a destitute mother and her son and decides to walk away from his bench.  Defiantly, he decides to live his life as a hustler playing pool in a bar and it's only Dan brave enough to stand up against him and with full authenticity he shames and loves his friend back to where he belongs.

The point of all of this is to show how more often than not it's our friends that we need more than anyone else in times of despair.  Our friends to come around us and build us up with that simple "It'll be all right".

About a week ago, I lost a good friend from high school from Covid19.  Growing up, I went to a very small and rural school district wherein most of my class knew each other from preschool onwards through high school.  So, the loss of my friend is akin to losing a beloved family member because my classmates and I are a family, even if time and distance has come between.  That weekend I found myself in a place of feeling stymied, unable to really focus, feeling numb and in shock with the absence of her presence in my life.  Sunday morning I went out to my garden to do some winter cleaning and picking of the last fruits of my labor.  The sky was blue and the sun was bright, not too cold yet not too warm.  I stood up from my chores and felt the warmth of the sunlight beaming down upon me and was overcome with this feeling of warmth.  I felt my friend's spirit hug me from within and felt her expressing comfort as she would with:

"It's gonna be okay, I love you, and thank you."

I will not say that I am completely over my grief, but that moment of comfort where I felt her with me has strengthened my resolve and ability to move forward.  A friend may not pass onward to whatever comes next to be that source of comfort and reprieve, in fact, my sole desire in life is to be present for those dear to me before fading away and to never fail to express verbally and nonverbally how much I love, for its in that that is truly known that:

"Every little thing is gonna be all right."

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', "This is my message to you-ou-ou:"
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. Don't worry!"
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing" - I won't worry!
"'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
