Shakespeare Quoteth: To Unfriend Or Not To Unfriend

Before moving forward, I want to state that I do not mean that one must stay connected with someone that is blatantly abusing or causing harm in anyway, physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.  In fact, I have about 6 former friends on my blocked list that have done just that and I blocked after much time had past and not without the pain of grief as I closed that chapter of my life and released them onwards into their journey whatever it shall be.

I must be an odd duck, well, in truth, I know I am.  Why, perchance, does my odd-duckness relate to the modern terminology of "unfriending"?  I shall inform.

For the majority of my latter twenties, I spent in and out of a myriad of therapy formats, from private to group, to religious to secular, and maybe everything in between.  What I learned from this journey was a truth that truly rocked my personal world view that of, no one lives in my head but me.  I lived my life previous to those years believing the voices in my heads were, in fact, the very real truths of the external, the judgments placed upon me within were what was being thought by those around me.  Through therapy, I began the amazing process of getting outside of my head and whenever I had this anxious moment of another's discomfort, I learned the value of seeking clarification.

Sometimes, when I do this, I find a person grateful for my coming to them, usually these are the woke, 'healthier' minded sort of folk, others are a bit put off, as this is not 'what is done', as if living a healthy, honest life is uncool, or rather a scary unattainable reality so better to stay in our own heads, in our own false security and comfort.  Continuing further, my coming to a friend for clarification would often bring about a discussion that needed to occur, about my actions, or theirs, something in between, or something else entirely that would lead to a deepening of the friendship.

Other times, this would not happen.  At times, an eruption from the so-called friend, which would lead to my belief that my intuition had been correct.  This also could lead to their gaslighting me which caused me to doubt myself.  Finally, causing the loss of someone I loved.

Not that this happens all the time, but throughout the years of practicing this upfront, radical honesty, I have learned increasingly to sit with my feelings, to grieve the loss, to ponder the reactions and decide upon which needs bears witness within, and, finally, to move forward transformed.

The point I'm trying to express is that current society has become to wrapped up in the world of social media as the One True Reality, that "if it's not on Facebook, it's not official", and react accordingly under that realm of thinking.  All too often that leads to quickly striking the "unfriend" option whether the momentary slight.  In all truth, this is a quick fix, the anger or other hurt feelings do not lessen, but only fester.  For most of your Facebook friends (specifically Facebook, although you can "unfriend" of sorts on other platforms), are those you know in some format of social circle locally, which means sooner or later you are bound to run into them and face that discomfort, whether internally or externally through some sort of verbal combat or physical altercation (hopefully not the latter).

Our lives reflect the seasons of the year and into each season different relationships people, each to teach us whatever lessons need to be gained during that time period.  Sometimes, they move on whether joyfully, with tears as we hug farewell, or with bitterness, with tears, yes, but silently and separately.  In each of these occurrence, gratitude can be had for the season of life they shared with you, the joys, the sorrows, the lessons gained given to each.

The truth is, when you flippantly unfriend someone on any social media platform, you are truly only harming yourself for you are robbing yourself of the true power of self examination, the lessons to be learned from the experience, and the true growth that could come is held stagnate.  Meanwhile, the person you unfriend, either will never know, will find out eventually, feel a momentary sting of heart-break, then albeit confused as to what they did, move forward with their lives.  (If they are like me, they might reach out with a private message apologizing for any wrong they may have caused and asking for clarification, yes, I have done this with those friends I truly appreciate and usually there is no response back.  Perhaps, our season has passed.)

All this to say, would you not rather alleviate all of this and reach out for clarification, knowing that that one moment of awkwardness will save you a whole mess of pain in the long run?  Reflect on that today.

Share your "unfriend" experiences below.  How did you feel when you were unfriended? What experiences led you to click the "unfriend" button?

Do You Validate?

Try

The advent of social media and the internet has its positives and negatives.  The idea of using it as a valuable resource and tool goes far beyond any previous information gathering available in the past.  Furthermore, the usage of the internet and social media sites makes it a possibility to advance your career in ways unheard of before, such as this blog, per example.  However, there are some negative side effects that perhaps have caused a major setback to human nature.

The need to seek approval, acceptance, and validation from another is not a new thing, but I believe has become increasingly more rampant in today's society due to the immediacy of response available to be found on all social media sites.  With the ability to post your feelings or thoughts and receive instantaneously responses in favor of your need, the ability to self-regulate and care for oneself has come up lacking.

It appears as if social media sites, such as Facebook and Twitter (to name a few), have become a beacon of connectivity that reduces the amount of inward reflection needed to maintain a soul's optimal health.

"It's not official if it isn't on Facebook," my friend and I would quip about dating relationships.  And, it seems this is an all too frequent a reality for today's social norm beyond that of romantic partnering.

All to often, I see posts seeking congratulations on celebrated events, or asking for condolences when in a tragic mood, to be met with a plethora of response required by the one who posted.  In addition, I have often seen posts championing for causes, pro or against, that are currently viral, yet when they are not mainstream events, the posts on such causes are unseen.  I'm not saying that such posts are inherently bad, because I see the value in the new "community" found within the framework of social media.  But, I do believe that one's inner necessity for what I have coined "social media validation" has gone too far, in that, partakers of these sites are losing their abilities to go inward, to seek alternate ways of healing and validation, and are finding the quick fix for their mental and emotional ailments, yet not truly healed.

I do not mean to offend or slander by posting this.  I admit that I have been an offender of such "social media validation" listed above.  But, I do want to wake all up to the reality that it is not the duty of an outside source to build up our confidence, nor is it possible to do just that.  In the end, reaching out without first looking within and/or seeking professional mental health help will prove insufficient for living one's best life.  Social media validation, I believe, is becoming just as much of an addiction or escape as an alcoholic or drug addict escaping into the bottle or crack pipe.

I know that it does not have to be this way and like I mentioned above, there is some inherent positive to the usage of social media sites if addressed from both the standpoint of a tool in itself, a connecting point but not the final connection between family and friends, so long as the individual partaking in social media comes at this resource with their own healthy mindset in place and the ability to seek validation on their own.

I don't mean to brag, but this has been a focus of my life this past year.  All too often, I have witnessed my propensity to post a celebration request, a complaint, a sorrow, the nitty gritty details of my "poor me" life, or even asking for a reference for some item or product I am seeking, and instead have chosen daily to actively deter myself from such choice.  In addition to twice monthly therapy, I have begun the process of eliminating my time on social media sites, choosing to spend time in self-help books and journal writing, nature walks, gardening, and so much more.  Because of this, my inner confidence has enabled me to find the validation of which I lacked when I merely looked for it in the external.

I used to hold my freak back
Now I'm letting go
I make my own choice
Bitch, I run this show
So leave the lights on
No, you can't make me behave
So you say I'm complicated
That I must be outta my mind
But you had me underrated
Rated, rated
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
What's wrong with being, what's wrong with being
What's wrong with being confident?
It's time to get the chains out
Don't take my word for it!  I would love to hear your thoughts on the above.  Comment below and I will respond.

Yet Another Blog About PTSD

Sunday evening it happened again.

I had an anxiety attack triggered by a traumatic occurrence; a reminder of abuse.  I spiraled, spiraled until I was unable to feel anything but the fear and sobbed.  All I could do was go home and retreat to my safe place.  Increasingly, in the last 7 years, I have retreated more and more from the world, actively choosing in a hyper-vigilant way my daily life activities based on what may impact my perceived physical and emotional wellbeing whether positive or negative, however slight or massive.

But, I'm getting ahead of myself.  I want to first start by showing the symptoms of PTSD, otherwise known as "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder".

Some of the most common symptoms of PTSD include the following:
  • Intense feelings of distress when reminded of a tragic event
  • Extreme physical reactions to reminders of trauma such as a nausea, sweating or a pounding heart
  • Invasive, upsetting memories of a tragedy
  • Flashbacks (feeling like the trauma is happening again)
  • Nightmares of either frightening things or of the event
  • Loss of interest in life and daily activities
  • Feeling emotionally numb and detached from other people
  • Sense of a not leading a normal life (not having a positive outlook of your future)
  • Avoiding certain activities, feelings, thoughts or places that remind you of the tragedy
  • Difficulty remembering important aspects of a tragic event
I don't want to unpack each of the symptoms listed above and how they are reflected in my life.  Nor do I want to re-hash the various causes of my PTSD, that runs the gamut from domestic violence at the hands of my spouse, religious trauma, toxic friendships, and even more.

This is not the time or place for me to openly detail the horrors of my past, but I must say that I frequently relive the horrific events of my past, the effects of which run through my mind like a depressing theatrical play bent on maintaining my belief in my unworth and lack of self confidence.  This leads to a wide plethora of the above symptoms such as loss of interest in life and activities I once enjoyed, otherwise known as a pervading depression that just has become my normal way of being, thus detaching from relationships and friends due to an overwhelming degree of lack of trust and belief that I will be hurt again, and an avoidance of certain activities and places due to my categorizations of "good" and "bad" people and places, or rather "safe" and "unsafe".

All of this has led my life to become increasingly rigid with overly strict boundaries.  It is difficult for me to be as spontaneous as I once was, a fact that saddens me.  I once self-described myself to some degree, and I think my friends' would agree, as carefree and zestfully on the quest to find the comedic aspects of life and enjoy it to the highest possible degree.  Not so anymore.

Now, I plan any social events weeks in advance, often finding myself dreading the activity as the date grows closer, praying and hoping fervently that the plans will be postponed or, even better, cancelled. It is a frequent joke of comedians this idea  such as "Cancelled plans are like heroin" quips John Mulaney, but for me they are even more so, they are an active sigh of relief that I can retreat within to the safety of my own secure boundary of protection, no threat of harm when my world is increasingly enclosed.

And, in the moments when I cannot evade the panic attack of a ptsd triggered event?  It is just as mentioned above and more, the extreme physical reactions for me come out as increased breathing, sobbing, racing mind full of fear, and flight more often that fight.

Why am I sharing this today? Because it helps to share, to let my own darkness be dispelled by the light of truth.  For not living in the darkness and stepping into that truth is the truest pathway to peace and healing.

Furthermore, as I step into this life as an entrepreneurial small business owner running an independent film production company, I ask myself, "what is my brand?"  For a good time, I could not answer the question or sought out arenas that felt not easy to articulate, let alone flourish.  Why? Because they were not truthful to me nor who I am. Then, finally the answer of my brand, my speciality for my business, came fluttering into my mind, with the realization of this blog and the notion of "Thriving Artist", as well as the Facebook group: Artist Thriving Network .  My brand is me, my story, my struggles to survive and even more so, to thrive.  It is in the openness to speak and share how I overcome that brings the most traction and connection.  So to, my mission in this brand is to help others to live in that light of truth by actively and boldly (despite the trepidation of their own fears) share their stories of learning to thrive through a variety of medium available to them afforded to them within the construct of Cafe-Girl Productions, Inc.

So, what do you think? Want to share your story? Comment below and I will respond.  Or email us at: cafegirlproductions@gmail.com

Falling Fast

I have always fallen in fast.

True, my fundamental Christian friends would label it as "lust", saying that sex outside of wedlock is nothing equating love and that only making the walk down the aisle satisfies that response.  And, in my past, I tried to comply to this, burying the feelings I had for past lovers and boyfriends.

Also true, I've not had as many former flames as those close to me.  In my short life, I can count the number of partners on both my hands alone, and each of them I see now held my heart exclusively for a season and a piece of that love remains forever.  This is something that regardless of how I have tried to suppress or release I cannot.  I must admit to my feelings for, my undying love for, each of them, regardless of how the love ended.

Another truth, only one of those ten did I not consummate the sexual act, and he not being of the Christian Right persuasion.  But, despite what the fundamental pastors tried to manipulate me to believe, giving myself to those nine completely did not diminish the love.  Lust does not equate love indeed, but it does represent an aspect of it.

Within the last week, I've been in conversation via Facebook mostly with a former flame, rather the first of the ten.  Something I thought nothing of when he first responded to my request, after all I wrote a long article on just why I friend my exes.  I cared for them once, right?

But, what transpired as we re-connected, smoothed over old wounds, and, yes, flirted a bit too much was my heart started to burn once again towards him.  The memories of our time together flooded back and I felt that pull once again towards him.

Stupid Girl, I chided myself.  I'm in a relationship, happily so at last, with my best friend and one that I hope to spend the rest of my life with, in fact.

But, this aforementioned ex was the first.  And as we say in the Whovian world, you never forget your first doctor, well, indeed you never forget your first time.  (Okay, so I'd had "penetration" before but that was from a very awkward teen boy in my sophomore year of high school and other than that I'd fooled around but never completed the act which always, always left me wanting more.)

So, the feelings started up afresh, almost as if time had passed.  In truth, in all these years apart, I'd come across men who bore some resemblance to him, feeling my heart surge within me every time.  Now, I know why.

When you love someone, in whatever form or fashion, it never dies.  Somewhat buried or hidden, a piece of that person and the affection you felt for them, the memories of their touch, their laughter, their presence in your life, remains for all time.

Because of these former flames, I believe whole-heartily in the idea of past lives.  Certain souls meeting up throughout all time for whatever purpose, love or whatnot.

As the days pass on now, I carry that with me, that remembrance of love then and now.  Whatever the future may hold, knowing, at last, our souls will always be connected despite barriers of time or space.

I have always fallen in fast, getting burned just as fast but overall living a life more richer and more satisfying for the loving I did.

Circumcize this!

"the ear is uncircumcised"

Without my daily quiet times, my ear can and will become uncircumcised--centering myself, feeding and filling my heart, with what glorifies him.

This then will bring him pleasure and will bring me pleasure and bring pleasure to all those around me and those I meet...(Wow, such a pleasurable experience writing that run-on sentence).

In everything I put my attention towards, without the LORD, I will not be able to "hear the message" of his story in all I focus on---books, Doctor Who, theatre, plays, interactions with others.  My heart and mind will be less quicker, if at all, to pray, which will cause my soul to grow cold, hard, then the root of bitterness will spring up and I will be less moldable to his grace--

Not in his will, not be of use to him, not trying to 'further the kingdom' as I will not be pouring out his grace or filled with the spirit.

Not showing the world his love...
