You can never go home again. Well, I did.

They say you can never go home again
That change is the only constant

But today I did go home again, in a sense
To my first Ashland home, where the journey began
I recall the young girl I was, naive, hopeful
I would tell her her life won't work out the way she has planned
There will be trials, sufferings, immense mountains to climb...
But she won't go it alone
It will not be as she wants but it will end far better and for a greater purpose
As I walk through the halls, dilapidated and empty, save some discarded placard pointing direction, as if a memory visual...a bit of scrap here in there, furniture stacked and stored away....empty empty rooms...
I feel her walking, see her inner struggle but by her side I feel so deeply those that peopled her experience here, strengthening, carrying, walking with her....cheering her on
I feel them by my side also, our voices ringing with laughter stronger, more present within my soul than a memory
On the day she moved in, she will never know that to come will be
One sided water gun fights
Simpson's marathons, vampire movies
Prank calls, leaf fights
Late night laughter in each others dorms
Sneaking off for illicit adventures
The night of the mad hair dying
Her friend's excitement over her trip to France
Astoria stories and other high school memories to share over 40s or grappa or red red wine
Late night cramming in the computer lab
Dead week stress that would haunt our nightmares for all of life
Random hookups that shall never be spoken of again, laughed over years to come
New love to celebrate
Heartbreak to commiserate
Walking downtown late Friday night
Skipping down Siskiyou Blvd at midnight after Fight Club
April fools dress up parties
It is all so effortlessly vivid to me in these halls
Although the building may be marked for a not yet set future demolition,
The friendship will remain,
Solid and forever

This blog is dedicated to, with my eternal love and gratitude, to my college friends; Matt, Mark, Errol, Corky, Jamie, John, & Cordelia
You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running, to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend

Closing time
Time for you to go out go out into the world.
Closing time
Turn the lights up over every boy and every girl.
Closing time
One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer.
Closing time
You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
I know who I want to take me home.
Take me home
Closing time
Time for you to go back to the places you will be from.
Closing time
This room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters come.
So gather up your jackets, and move it to the exits
I hope you have found a
Friend.
Closing time
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.

Reframing

Cognitive re-framing is a psychological technique that consists of identifying and then changing the way situations, experiences, events, ideas, and/or emotions are viewed. Cognitive re-framing is the process by which such situations or thoughts are challenged and then changed.

For most of my life, I have experienced crippling depression and anxiety that has founded and enhanced my belief in my unworthiness and doubt of my deserving of love and quality relationships.  This has caused me to not only continually seek out and sustain abuse and toxic relationships, both romantic and otherwise, as well as find other ways to sabotage my own pathway to success in achieving my dreams.

In short, my lack of confidence debilitated my journey to achieve and receive success, healthy relationships, and a quality life-style.

For the many years that I have been in and out of therapy, I have learned a catchphrase that has helped bring me out of the pit of depression, at certain times, this being "change the scene".  When I find myself in a pit of despair, the idea behind "change the scene" is to rise up and move away from whatever you are doing.  This works momentarily to help not fall down the rabbit hole of doom spiraling into one's personal pit of hell.  This technique has helped bring me out of the slump, but it has done more than that on the long term.

For getting me out of the spiraling downward darkness of my own hell helps me to find peace in order to truly seek out the root causes behind the depression and anxiety.  What I discovered then, through years of soul-searching and the journey towards mental wellness, is my unwavering belief in my unworthiness.   However, knowing the root causes and using "change the scene" was only the beginning.  In moments of hig stress, I still find myself spiraling to the lowest forms of depression, even contemplating ending my life, but with the support of much love from quality friendships, I have slowly been able to overcome.  Continuing this thread, I have sustained this belief by my usage of words and thoughts.

Thus, brings me to the title of this blog, 're-framing' and as the definition above states:  Cognitive re-framing is the process by which such situations or thoughts are challenged and then changed.

Last year was seemingly a hard year yet it was a growing year of expanding my spiritual and emotional awareness.  Without a stable income, I found myself with the continual ache in my stomach.  What I have discovered is, when one arena of the soul is in imbalance, the rest of the soul suffers.  As I began working and regaining my footing financially, the rest of my soul began to find balance.

Instead of saying to myself, "I'm so broke so I cannot pay the cost to re-up the website for my business" and finding myself following down into the fears of lack and concerns of disapproval, I re-framed the thought by finding a new web-site company that would charge considerably less and began to say to myself, then to others, "I am re-branding the website".  That is merely one example and one of the first that changed my thinking to move me beyond the feelings of doubting my abilities and my self worth.

I also began realizing that significant relationships in my life were abusive, toxic, even those who were seemingly helping me in my business were, in fact, takers, those who were along for the ride for their own gain, who would use me, discredit me, manipulate me for their own career boost, then play the victim if I defended or stood up for myself.  Once and for all, I stood up for myself by removing myself from their friendship altogether.  I still struggle with trust issues when it comes to relationships but I am increasingly making active choices to engage with healthy individuals who are themselves also on the path to wellness, some who have even struggled with abuse and other similar issues of insecurity.  We are in the path to recovery together, helping each other, building each other up, side by side, not tearing down for our own benefit.

This re-framing has allowed me to look back on my past accomplishments, both in my career and my personal life, and find pride in the achieving.  The end results may not have been perfect, I may not have always gotten it right, but I completed the project, I learned, I grew, I overcame.  In the past, I viewed these accomplishments with shame, allowing the haters, the abusers, the jealous, the takers, to silence my voice as they sought to belittle and overpower.

However, along the way I found people whose support remains unwavering, who have proved their friendship to be true, while those that did not have slipped along the wayside.  Increasingly, as I step into my own worth, I find such positive relationships flowing towards me.  As the quote on the top of the blog states,

"What you visualize becomes your reality".

Begin today, my friend, the journey to re-frame your thinking.  It's a slow process, yes, so start with one aspect of your day.  It can be a minute daily struggle that you turn to a lesson or it can be the larger aspect of turning away from a toxic relationship, despite the heartbreak, knowing that it's more painful to remain than withdraw.  Just take that one baby step each day to re-frame and change your thinking, with that empowerment of your soul will emerge and sustain.

Anything that is worthwhile doesn't come easy. ---Lia Rose Dugal

The Christian Right Needs To Die!!

Wow!  Brave soul for clicking that link! I know, I know, it's quite the click bait anger making title.  But, first let me explain, I want no soul to perish in anyway.  I believe wholeheartedly that we all are brought to this plane of existence for the certain purpose of learning the lessons needed to elevate our souls to the next level in our evolution, make that mean to you what you desire.  In more non-spiritual terms, we are all on a journey towards healing and becoming better at being human, all at different levels or circumstances but basically where we need to be according to what's right for us as individuals.

Furthermore, my purpose in this entry is not to solely call out and destroy the Christian Right. Fundamentalism, a strict adherence to the basic principles of any subject or discipline, is a disease not just for the religious, Christian or otherwise, but can infect a liberal mind as well.  Let that sink in, my liberal minded friends and family.

Most of you know by now, that at one point I considered myself part of the Christian Right, as it were, a believer of Jesus more specifically.  After the toil of my deconstruction, I hold no ill-will or anger towards my former friends still connected to that life-style.  Because of this, I have a particular understanding and compassion that I hope can not only shed some light on those on the outside, those of the more liberal persuasion, but also help awaken the right minded fundies to the ways they have gone astray.

That's right.  I believe that a large part of the Christian right, perhaps those that would be indeed described as true "fundamentalists", the ones that appear the most vocally obstinate against progressive movements and current affairs, who seemingly take up arms against anything that doesn't fall into what they deem as 'right' and 'good', have fallen astray from the very teachings of Jesus Christ.  I do not say this with a light heart, indeed my heart is broken.  I have fond memories with people that fall into this realm, of which I once held dear and called more than friends, but family, of a sort.  In truth, I do still hold very close to my heart, which is the impetus for this blog. I also know that a good portion of those I used to walk with, who still believe in a more Evangelical Christianity, not so much fundamentalist, are more decent in their approach to sharing the gospel and in that way are more aligned with the teachings of Jesus.

The former are those that complain wildly on social media and in the real world about the liberal agenda, who seemingly take everything as a personal affront on their beliefs, and who seem to not be able at all to see a larger worldview other than their own.  The latter are those who are active on social media and in the real world by simply choosing to love, bless, and serve.  I think this is an apparent distinction we can all agree upon.  In addition, I have heard of conservative churches that are doing their best to educate, be more open, and willing to adapt and listen to other world-views and ideas.

But, it's the so-called fundamentalist viewpoint I wish to address, this way of being that needs to go by the wayside, perishing in a sea of its own ignorance once and for all.  As I said, it's not merely a disease for the Christian Fundamentalist alone, but I believe one that has infected the more liberal atheistic as well, for example.

For the purpose of this entry, let's focus on the Christian Fundamentalist.  For those reading this that are not of this ilk and have never been part of that world view, let me start by explaining a little of the teaching that I believe has damaged the minds and hearts of these Christian souls.  If you are a beloved friend of mine that is still within the Christian right world view or are someone that I do not know but is a 'believer', as you read the below sentences, let your heart be softened so that you may have ears to hear.  In so doing, it is with the tenderness of my fullest compassion that you can grow closer to understanding the true Jesus Christ.

So, when I was attending Calvary Chapel, the common thread in most of the bible studies and services were that 'the world hates Jesus, the world hates Jesus in you'.  After hearing so much, can you imagine the end result of such, to be blunt, brainwashing? That's right, you begin to believe the world hates you.  You believe wholeheartedly that the world outside your church is evil, wicked, and that everyone that comes into your life is basically fueled by the enemy, or rather, an enemy themselves.  Does this help see why a Christian may seem so combative when addressed?  They don't feel they are being combative, they feel you are being combative.

Furthermore, in my church days, we were encouraged not to consume anything, (ex: news, media, books, higher education), that was 'of the world', and were encouraged to consume only that which was approved by the church leadership.  This lack of being able to educate yourself made you vulnerable to the belief and control of another.  I do not mean to target or place blame on the church's leadership in anyway.  I know quite a few pastors who are good at heart and wish the best for the flock they believe they are called to serve and help guide to the teachings of Jesus.  I am merely trying to state my experience with hopes to enlighten those who have never been within a Christian fundamentalist setting as well as give a little insight to those within at present.

So, can you imagine what my life was like when I left Calvary Chapel ten years ago? I cannot begin to explain the sense of shattered isolation and confusion I felt, the heart break, the betrayal, the sense of loss of identity, the anger of the loss of my youth, the lies I readily consumed that fell flat.  Yes, I was angry and scared, for myself, and for my friends who I believed were trapped inside what I, at the time, called a cult.  I still hold that fundamentalism in all its variety is cult-like.  Through the years of my healing after I left the church, I slowly discovered that these notions I were taught, were false.

With that, I address my Christian reader, those I know personally and those I do not.  First and foremost, dear one, the world does not hate Jesus, in fact, they think he is a pretty bang up guy, regardless of whether they see him as God, a prophet, or just a guy.  "I got no beef with Jesus," one friend said to me.  And another, "Jesus is the shit."  Please suspend your need to control the wording and belief of who Jesus is in your worldview and let that sink in.  The people 'of the world' are not out to get you and, most importantly, do not hate you!

So, dear one, its up to you to how you take in this information and what you choose to do with it.  But, before I let you off so easily, I need you to understand one more thing.  I also believe, that according to what I learned from my bible studies back when I attended Calvary Chapels, that you have fallen astray from those teachings.  Not all of you, but a good portion, and I base this on your words and actions on social media and in real life based on the current affairs in our country, whether that be pandemic related or such issues pertaining to civil rights.

First, the Bible teaches us to follow the law of the land, as well as the law of the Lord.  Jesus says to 'render to Caeser what is his, and to God what is his', which, yes, can be taken to be connected to taxes but I also see the value in focusing this on all aspects of national government concern.  I hear you spout off how we are called to obey the president as he was put their by God, but from what I can tell, this is only acceptable when he falls into the political category you approve of, that of, Republican.  This appears one-sided and not fully accurate to what you profess, as well as, it appears as if you are not fully surrendering yourself to God and His will.  The law of the land, in all its various forms of our government, has decreed, for your safety, to wear a mask for the protection of yourself and others, for example, but you refuse, why?

Next, Jesus and the teachings in the Bible states to 'lay down your lives as he, Jesus, laid down his life for us', but sadly I do not see this.  It is "not about me", my friends and I would profess as young Christians.  "It's all about Jesus," we'd proclaim in worship songs and in our speech.  But, I do not see that line of thinking in your social media posts or every day life.  More and more, I see a selfish, combative person who wants to force their way, wants to play the victim while victimizing.  That, my dear friend, is in direct opposition of the teachings of Jesus Christ, whatever, the interpretations of him may be.  Can you see now why so many seem to reject to the church? Hint: it has nothing to do with Jesus!

All is not lost for you, dear Christian reader, nor for my friends on the liberal left that of themselves fall into the realm of fundamentalist thinking.  We are all on the path, as mentioned above, to healing and inner awakening.  Let us all start by looking inward, letting the light of awareness pierce our souls and hearts, bringing us to the humility that comes from truly knowing ourselves, warts and all.  With that humble honesty, we can come together, listening rather than reacting, holding space regardless of political stance and seeking the highest good for all.

Can you do that, dear Christian? Can you truly lay down your own self and release your preconceived notions for the highest good of another? Can you do that, dear liberal? Can you truly lay down your own self and release your preconceived notions good of another? No change will come if you cannot.  I speak for myself as well as for others, mind you, and its a daily, minutely, journey, one taken with humility and utmost self awareness.

Join me in this journey, dear friends, the journey within for healing so that the world without may also be healed.

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

My Declaration Of Independence

Hello.  Consider this my personal declaration of independence:
I just wanted to give an update on my soul.  For the past several years, I have been inundated with people I put my full trust and love into, only to realize they were not friends at all.  Through the intense pain and heartbreak that came, I had to disengage from these individuals.  Although it was painful and I experienced the grieving process, it was increasingly becoming more detrimental to remain in the toxic environment.  Several of these individuals most likely were acting out of their own mental un-wellness and as much as I encouraged to get help, they wouldn't nor would they admit they had a problem.  I had to do what was right for myself, my company, and for those I care about that are seeking a path to wellness.
It has been a painful journey and I have grieved the loss of those I still deeply care about.  However, they continue to harbour resentment and anger towards myself for my stepping up to this abuse and toxicity.
I have realized throughout my life that I am a conduit for others abusive patterns acted out towards me.  Perhaps stemming from my own lack of self worth, fears of abandonment, and codependency/relationship addictions, I was fearful of standing up for myself and speaking my heart.  I am working on this and my trauma through one on one therapy, self help books, actively being good to myself, and choosing healthy friendships.
In the past years, I have become increasingly anti social.  The fact of the matter is, from many circumstances and relationships in my life, I have developed PTSD.  Because of this,  whenever I go out, I am constantly aware of my surroundings, know where the exits are, looking over my shoulder for possible threats, and I label certain people and places either good or bad, safe or unsafe.  I am doing the work to soothe myself and heal these patterns but it's a slow process.  This is why I have stepped back from engagements with the local theater scene, in some situations, only participating when I have to.  Perhaps not good for my career, but I cannot keep distracting myself from my own mental health issues.  I have increasingly felt unsafe and that certain aspects of the theatre scene feel toxic to me.  People may label me as 'unsupportive' or 'only out for myself', nothing could be further from the truth. Imagine having such intense anxiety over a certain place that you can't even walk in the door..making plans to attend functions weeks or months in advance only to cancel or withdraw due to being worn out and not prepared.
Some may continue to try to harm my reputation even after this post.  These people are not friends, but toxic frenemies. I see that now. I cannot tolerate abuse any longer.  I need to guard myself and continue to work for my own healing.  It is what will help me to be a better artist and human, to make the world a brighter place.
If we continue to fight injustices on a national and global level, we won't truly win.  We must begin within in order to truly impact.

Cycles Of Life

The Cycles Of Life

I have often said that my life is built on lists, the daily 'need to get' done in order to crush my goals and achieve my dreams.  I frequently remind myself that I truly do not "need to get" everything done in order to have a productive day.  It is in the little goals we set and accomplish that move us steadily forward.

This year I have added to my daily chore lists monthly vision intention boards.  In previous years, I would only do at the start of the year.  However, doing it at the beginning of each month has helped fine-tune the process of reaching my goals towards forward movement to the brighter future for myself, my little kitty daughter, Tansy, and, in a grander scheme, the world.

What I have noticed from these monthly vision intention boards is that obtaining our goals and reaching completion is set on cycles, not just that of the normal life cycles we all experience.  These boards have helped me stay the focus during the uncertainty that befell with the arrival of Covid-19.  I realized that the ability in reaching our goals is not arrived at based on the external reality but of an internal understanding.

Throughout this year, because of this, I have already reached many a goal and foresee many others becoming a reality and reaching completion.  However, I do not force the goal to be reached, unforeseen events will arise that may seem to knock me off course, yet when the intention is set, obstacles become learning lessons and stepping stones to help arrive.  Once I have arrived at the completion of such goal I have been striving for, I realize the next goal becomes the focus, in a sense a cycle of life.  In each cycles, the lessons to be learned and confidence of my soul strengthened, to trust in the process and the right timing.  It is shaping the belief that although the pathway may seem to veer off course from the desired outcome, the truth is that I am being guided and shown what growth is needed to achieve my dreams.

So, yes, I recommend intention vision boards, if only for that the act of creating such bringsmabout a healing and stress relief that only is brought about by creating art for the sake of art, not for the showing off to others! And, right now more than ever, we all could use that stress relief!  In addition, in the times where I take the time to create, vision boards, cards for friends, journaling, free-style painting, are the times when I discover the creativity to enliven my business and personal life.

Find your own way of reaching your goals, you know best the ways that work for you.  The most important take away in this blog is to trust and rest in the process, that all things come about in their right timing.  Do what you need to do EACH DAY to take care of yourself and enjoy life to your fullest.

As a dear friend quotes, "Have fun with life, because you aren't having fun, you are doing it wrong!"

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
