Remembering David #inlovingmemory #intheshapeofyou

I recall, last time you were here Your laughter a melody that lingers still

Nearly a month ago, on May 5th, 2023, I lost one of my best friends, David, surprisingly, unexpectedly, gone.  The last several weeks have been a blur of work and helping his mother with the life shift of which she now finds herself.  The mourning from his absence has not fully set itself upon me, mostly during this time, I have felt a sense of numb shock of disbelief.  I keep finding myself expecting to hear from him over social media, a private message about some creative project he just dreamed up and of which he wishes me to collaborate, a remark or comment on something I have newly posted, a word of encouragement, an inside joke.

Only to then be hit with the truth of it not ever being a reality again.  No longer will I see his broad smile as he approaches, his fancy hat atop his head adorned with matching coat, coming to hang out or help with a project, waving me in excitedly at his studio for a photography session, or his boisterous giggle cheering others along at the local public access TV studio he loved so much.

David's heart was large enough to include all he met as chosen family in an instant of knowing, a patient sense of non-judgment for all he met, seeing them as they are and not what he wanted from them.  His enjoyment was simple, in being with those he loved, exploring their creativity alongside his, a forever champion for those he held dear.  His heart was bruised by betrayal yet it remained soft enough to continue to love, in times of good and times of hardship, he was a loyal soul always ready for whatever was needed.

I have had the privilege and honor of meeting up with many of those he held especially dear, sifting through his wide variety of creative projects he birthed.  David's influence upon the world, the mark he left behind, was diverse upon the hearts of many.  He will not be forgotten, his presence lingers still within those who loved and love him still.

I have yet to truly cry, but I feel a sense of peace, as if my friend's strong presence and reassurance is still abiding within, encouraging me to persevere, excited for the projects swirling in my mind, an ever present and enthusiastic cheerleader upon my soul.

In high school, I attended a YMCA summer camp called "Ravencliff" in the hills of Humboldt County, where I heard the story of Yellow.  Yellow was a princess surrounded and protected by only that of Yellow, shielded by her parents warning her about the foreboding outside world.  But, as is necessary, she eventually finds her way into the great beyond, discovering to her horror, at first, that every time she meets, then departs from someone, she is different from whom she was.  But, she finally discovers these differences have only made her better, for she carries the lessons learned and memories shared from each person experienced and after all is said and done, she is now "Rainbow", no longer merely Yellow.

David brightened my life with hope and real love, turning me into "Rainbow Lia".  The mark he left upon me will burn forever bright with the intention to do likewise for those I know and have yet to meet.
This hole in my heart
and so I'll carry it wherever I go
Like a treasure that travels with me down every road
There's this longing lonesome ending
kind of bitter, kind of sweet
There's a hole in my heart
There's a hole in my heart
There's a hole in my heart in the shape of you

Cafe Girl: A Story of Coffee, Sex, Cigarettes, & True Love

Act Two, Scene Ten

(Maggie and Matthew in cafe.)

Maggie:

So, I think I got it.  Making all the drinks is still a little scary but--

Matthew:

You'll get it.  Don't be nervous at all.

Maggie:

First day jitters that's all.

(Thomas enters.)

Maggie:

Shit.

Matthew:

Want me to get this one?

Maggie:

No, no.  I got to face it sometime.

(Thomas approaches counter, looks at Maggie, awkward silence.)

Thomas:

Hey.

Maggie:

Hi.

Thomas:

Did I see the other night, with Deborah?

Maggie:

Yeah, girls' night.

Thomas:

Yeah, yeah.

Maggie:

So, you work there?

Thomas:

Yeah.

Maggie:

You like it?

Thomas:

Yeah, it pays the bills.  The church, well, you know.

Maggie:

Yeah.

(silence.)

Thomas:

So, you work here now? How do you like it?

Maggie:

First day.

Thomas:

Well, its pretty easy.  You'll get the hang of it.  I wish I was still here sometimes.

Maggie:

Bet you do.

(silence.)

Get you anything?

Thomas:

Just a cup of coffee and one of those amazing peach pecan muffins.

Maggie:

All right.

(She pours coffee, gets muffin, sets it on the counter.  He lays some cash on the counter, takes both in hands, waits.)

Saving up money...for school.

Thomas:

School?

Maggie:

Yeah...in California.

Thomas:

Out of state. Huh?

Maggie:

Yeah. What do you think about that?

Thomas:

(after a moment)

If you need to do that...

Maggie:

Yeah, well.  I can't stick around here all my life.

Thomas:

Yeah.  Well, good luck.

(He turns and walks down to patio, sits. Ray enters slowly, nods to Thomas, then enters cafe.)

Matthew:

Hi there, Ray.  How are you?

(Ray nods at him. He sits at table down center, pulls out paper from coat pocket, unfolds it, stares at it.)

Matthew:

Need coffee?

(Ray nods. Matthew goes behind counter, grabs a cup of coffee, and brings it down to him.)

Matthew:

(handing it to him and sitting across from him.)

So, everything okay?

Ray:

Well...

(pushes paper across to him. Matthew turns it toward him, looks at it.)

Matthew:

I'm...sorry.

Ray:

Thanks.

Matthew:

So, how long do you...

Ray:

have to live? Well, there is a place up north where I can get regular treatments, should give me a few more years.

Matthew:

So, you're going to go.

Ray:

Don't have a choice, if I want to live.

Matthew:

Yeah.  Just keep in touch.

Ray:

Of course.

(Thomas gets up and crosses to them, sits.)

Thomas:

So, she works here now?

Matthew:

Yeah. So?

Thomas:

Says she's moving...for school?

Ray:

So, you gonna say something?

Thomas:

What is there to say?

Ray:

So, that's that.

Thomas:

Yeah, I guess so.

Ray:

Really? Really?

Thomas:

Yeah, really.

Ray:

Its just...

(looks at paper.)

Thomas:

What?

Ray:

You only get one chance at this, you know.

Thomas:

At what?

Ray:

Life, is all.

Thomas:

Well, well, well. Since when have you become a philosopher?

Matthew:

Hey, Thomas--

Ray:

(hesitating)

Since this.

(pushes paper towards Thomas, who looks at it.  Silence.)

Thomas:

Sorry, man.

Ray:

No worries.  So going up north for treatments and living.

Thomas:

Seems like everyone's taking off, then.

(Maggie crosses down to table, sits nearest Matthew.)

Matthew:

Not everyone.

Thomas:

What about you, man? You going to stick around here the rest of your life?

Matthew:

Hopefully, not.

Thomas:

So, what's with you and Deborah?

Matthew:

Nothing. I mean, we're done.  She called it off...

Ray:

And, you're okay with that?

Matthew:

I shouldn't be? What else can I do?

Ray:

Sometimes if you want something, you got to fight.

Matthew:

What, are you Shaggy now?

Ray:

Yeah, never give up the fight, that's right.  Life is short...

Thomas:

So, Deborah?

Matthew:

She and James are...

Thomas:

Really?

Maggie:

(after a moment)

Its been a few weeks since they got together, all seems well, I guess. But, you know, how James is, classic Leo. Passionate one moment, Fire the next.

Thomas:

I don't quite follow you.

Maggie:

Runs hot and cold that one. I just hope she doesn't end up hurt.

Thomas:

Well, the future is not in our hands.

(He finishes coffee and rises, throwing a couple dollars on table)

I got to get to work.

(Looks at Maggie, then away.)

I'll be seeing you.

(To Matthew.)

Later, man.

(Ray rises.)

Ray:

Well, I got a doctor's appointment...

(rising slowly.)

Matthew:

(rising with him.)

Take care of yourself. You know what Shaggy always says...

Ray:

Yeah, yeah I do.

Matthew:

Right, that. So, don't.

(Thomas and Ray exit, Matthew watches after them.)

(Lights fade.)

Finishing Well

After the Vagina Diaries and the Vagina Monologues were over, when I set out to write more of a spiritual-minded focus, I envisioned something like "the psychic diaries" or something of that nature, a daily entry following my progress in the realm of all things spiritual, a concrete guideline of sorts.

But, I'm starting to see that spirituality in all of its outpourings is anything but concrete or easily defined, but is truly infinite and limitless.  Those moments of divine inspiration as it were happen along the way, when you're driving to work, running errands, cleaning out the kitty litter box, or other times doing something truly spiritual such as meditating or praying.

The point is, spiritual inspiration and learning is not something one can whip up at a moment's notice but is something that is both surprisingly spontaneous and meditative.

Thus, the lesson that has making its way in my head for the last few weeks has been simply that of "Finish Well."  Just those two simple words are what propel me forward.

Awhile back, I started the process of renewing my substitute credential.  (For those who don't know, I was certified to teach elementary school back in California and did for a short while before going utterly bonkers based on the fact that that just wasn't for me!)  Teaching in anyway is not a desirable career focus for me and is, in fact, the back-up day-job.  There are so many more things I'd rather do to earn money.  Loving children, as I do, is not the issue.  I really just don't enjoy teaching, good as it as I may be, I really don't.

So, why am I keeping on with the renewal process, despite the crazy hoops I still have to go through to achieve that in no way whatsoever desired goal?

Because I started it.  And, the Universe, God (dess), the Divine is pressing on me to finish well.  For reasons that I do not know, because I foresee more work coming to me in the areas of my passion in a lucrative sense.  But, who knows?  All I know is what I'm supposed to do this minute, to finish well.

That's what's defined as faith, I guess.
