But woke we, the left leaning did, first with the vibrant women's marches and others similar, the surge in independent media sources commenting and informing on all political and social events, the rise in protest against the unfair treatment and violence towards those of the minority, and despite Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris failing to reach the highest office, women's voices heard louder in sharing their universal stories of being held back and sexually objectified. Despite the setbacks on a broader level perpetuated by the Trump Administration both first and second, the awakening of the peoples against such and for the good of the citizen has been resounding. And, all of this, because of one core truth echoing throughout all the struggle, one core truth that kept the seeker strong in pursuit of overcoming, one core truth that held fast to the promise of victory.
As my eyes opened this morning after last night's resounding win, I recalled myself back to the woman I was ten years previous, reflecting on all that has transpired during such time, the growth within myself, without, individually and collectively. Back then, I was closer to the women who had recently broken free from an abusive marriage and church, early in her deconstruction from both, without therapy or like assistance, a woman still wracked with insecurity and disbelief in her own worthiness, yet driven to create, to heal, to find meaning in life, to acquire love. That same woman took herself downtown armed with a sign that simply read "Free Hugs: Love Trumps Hate", even reaching out to hug one who had voted opposite of me. As the tumult of the years rolled forward, as I found the strength to stand for the rights of others, so to I found that strength within. Stumbling through personal relationships toxic, I learned that my choice, my values, had significance and held weight. I learned that I need not allow access to those who sought to undermine and disrespect. And, so doing, that woman who stood on the corner declaring "Love Trumps Hate", found within herself the worthiness of loving herself.
As I bask in the recent wins of last night's "Blue Tsunami", reveling at last in the power of Democracy, my mind prepares for the days, weeks, months to follow. Democratic politicians have a history of being like snails when it comes to actually enacting change and the passage of laws when they finally reach their office, so it seems as if the promises made on the campaign trail are broken. So, as we the people we must not drift ourselves back to comfortable numbness but stay awake, holding our elected officials' accountable to their promises, continuing to champion for the right of free healthcare for all, a safe and productive education system, gun reform, enforce acts to help fight climate change, secure immigration system, divest from the government of Israel while still being an advocate for the safety of the Jewish people as well the safety of the Palestinian People, continued efforts to have safe and unlimited access for women's health care and bodily autonomy, and security for the rights of the LGBTQAI+ and other minorities. As well, we must also remember that those that helped rise Trump to power, that ideology is still very much active and has been since this country's origins, and such through the catchphrase helped us left-leaning overcome, we must extend towards others to help see the errancy in their beliefs. Thus, we must always remember that we all seek that universal core truth:
